Recently we were investigating the options to resolve the particular analysis requirements of a customer to combine well defined data held in BW with more ad hoc data from various sources.  This wasn’t the first time I have come across this issue.  It is a problem that has been around since the inception of Data Warehousing.  Systems such as SAP BW were created specifically to centralise, homogenise and standardise data, to provide an efficient and consistent analysis view.  Data warehouses also drive good data governance and security, so this gives great control of data from an IT viewpoint.  Our requirement however, involves the opposite; namely de-centralisation, de-standardisation and control being passed to particular individuals or non-IT departments.

We have been recently working with a large multi-national logistics corporation who use SAP on premise solutions to run their core business.  They are a rapidly evolving group of companies growing via frequent acquisition activity or with new start-ups, and hence have many subsidiaries and indeed their entire head office operations sitting outside the SAP suite on a multitude of stand-alone systems.  So - there are multiple companies in many countries, each with their own finance departments running bespoke finance packages.  As you can imagine, just the monthly task of consolidating the various accounting structures into the corporate group results was a logistical and accounting nightmare!  Best not to think about the costs of maintaining and supporting this!!
